(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A group of Chicago alders on Wednesday condemned fellow Ald. Byron Sigcho-Lopez for participating in a rally where someone lit an American flag on fire last week.

The City Council members said Sigcho-Lopez (25th) should resign as chair of the Housing Committee. They called for a special council meeting.

"He has a bigger responsibility as a committee chair and member of the mayor's leadership team because this job isn't about elevating people who want to burn everything down," Ald. Bill Conway (34th) said at a City Hall news conference.

Sigcho-Lopez has said he had nothing to do with the flag burning that occurred at the rally, which was to protest the Israel-Hamas war and to call for the Democratic National Convention to pull out of Chicago. On Wednesday, he dismissed his critics.

"These are distractions and political theater, no more than that," Sigcho-Lopez told WBBM Newsradio.
