(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Mayor Johnson has condemned an apparent attack on a Chicago alderwoman during a protest Thursday over a migrant tent encampment being set up in Brighton Park.
CBS Chicago reports the protest was organized by people who oppose plans for a migrant shelter at a semi parking lot near 38th and California on the Southwest Side. Ald. Julia Ramirez, 12th, and an aide reportedly attempted to meet with protesters and were swarmed.
Video showed demonstrators appearing to hit the alderwoman and the aide.
"My administration supports the right to peaceful protest and free speech, but this type of action against a public servant is unconscionable," Johnson said in a prepared statement. "Any violent act against an elected official in our city is unacceptable and must be condemned in the strongest terms."
Chicago police say a 30-year-old woman declined treatment at the scene, while a 21-year-old man was taken to St. Anthony Hospital in fair condition.
The alderwoman was expected to issue a statement this afternoon.
