(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The idea of putting a new White Sox stadium in the South Loop seems to be sitting well with the alderwoman whose ward includes the potential site.
White Sox Owner Jerry Reinsdorf and Mayor Brandon Johnson reportedly met this week to have a preliminary discussion about locating a new stadium on the site near Clark Street and Roosevelt Road known as "The 78."
The land is owned by Related Midwest, and 3rd Ward Ald. Pat Dowell has met with officials from that company. On Friday afternoon, she issued a cautiously optimistic statement about the prospects for a stadium that would be part of a broader redevelopment.
"Assuming the financial details can be worked out, this development shows promise as a great growth opportunity for the City of Chicago. The addition of significant market and affordable housing, retail, and a world class baseball stadium and concert venue can be the sort of catalytic investment this city needs," Dowell said.
But Dowell, who chairs the powerful Finance Committee, said officials must study many issues, including traffic and security and "quality of life" conditions for people living in the area.
