CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- In this Women's History Month, a member of the Chicago City Council is poised to make history.

Jeylu Gutierrez was elected Alderperson of the 14th Ward, the seat held by convicted former Alderman Edward Burke for a half century.

But, probably in late June, it's believed she'll become the first city council member to give birth in office. Any Alderperson can vouch that the job is anything but 9 to 5.

However, Gutierrez said pregnancy and motherhood won't keep her from carrying on her role as alderwoman.

"It's a great empowerment for women- for them to remember it's tough when you're a working mom, but you can still do it."

She says she's thankful for the support of her council colleagues, her family and especially her office staff and hopes she'll inspire other working moms.

"They've been really supportive..like always they're asking me how I'm doing and then looking out for me and my ward," Gutierrez added. "I also want to say that I have a really good support system at home and also in the office."
