Blizzard won't bury 'silly, meaningless little celebration' in Woodstock

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — It's the 30th anniversary of the filming of Groundhog Day in Woodstock, and the show will go on, despite the winter snowstorm expected to hit Illinois.

“The snow looks like it's tracking south of us here in Northern Illinois,” Rick Bellairs, Chairman of Groundhog Days, said Tuesday.

But for people coming from the south to enjoy the festival, that is another matter.

“People coming from the south are going to have a tough time getting here. They’ll be driving through a lot of snow,” Bellairs said.

In more than 20 years, Groundhog Days has only been canceled once. That was in 2011 during the “Snowmageddon” storm.

The far north suburb will once again celebrate the Bill Murray comedy classic, which was filmed in the Woodstock Square in 1992, with a weather prognostication from Woodstock Willie and a screening of the feature. It was directed by the late Harold Ramis, a Chicago native.

Bellairs tells WBBM Newsradio he’s looking forward to seeing a crowd of smiling faces during the ceremony.

“These days, there is so much bad news from pandemic to politics, and tomorrow's event is just a silly, meaningless little celebration in the middle of winter. So, I’m looking forward to it.”

The celebration begins at 7 a.m. in the Woodstock Square to answer the question: Will there or won’t there be six more weeks of winter weather?
