Alleged mail thief jumps out of 3rd floor Hyde Park apartment trying to evade police

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A man is in critical condition after allegedly jumping from a window while trying to escape police in Hyde Park Sunday.

Chicago police said the man was hospitalized after he jumped from a third-story window while running from authorities.

Officers said around 12:30 p.m.they arrived at an apartment building near 54th and Woodlawn after receiving a call about someone stealing mail.

When they arrived, they found the man in the apartment lobby. Police said he forced his way into a third-story apartment, where he jumped.

He was arrested and taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in serious condition.

Police haven't said if this incident is connected to recent mail thefts in the Loop, Lincoln Park and the Near North Side.
