(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — An alumna of a now-closed Catholic high school in River Grove is trying to save a large mosaic of the Virgin Mary that dates back to the opening of the school in the early-1960s.

“People said it can’t be saved.  And I looked at it and I thought, I think it can be,” said Carolyn Bull.

She is trying to raise more than $100,000 to help preserve the mosaic titled “Our Lady of River Grove.”

It’s nearly 20 feet by 8 feet. And it’s on the side of a school building that was Guerin Prep, which closed a year ago. The property was sold to a developer who plans to tear it down.

Bull says she’s getting support from fellow alums.

“I found that some are angry with the Archdiocese,” for not doing more to help save the mosaic, she said.

“It’s a beautiful piece of art.  It was made by one of the nuns.  And we don’t want to see it be destroyed.”

The deadline to raise the money is mid-August. For more information on the fundraising effort, click here.
