(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Amazon reportedly is closing its brick-and-mortar bookstores, including its Chicago store on Southport Avenue.

That North Side location opened with some fanfare five years ago. It was mystifying to some that the online superstore blamed with killing independent book stores was itself segueing into bricks and mortar.

“When they opened that store, I can remember feeling a personal affront,” Suzy Takacs, owner of the Book Cellar in Lincoln Square, said Wednesday. “Like, really? Why do you have to open it? And why do you have to open it so close to me. And who’s going to shop there?”

Takacs says her business is stable. She said she’s not sorry to see Amazon close its store but will still feel the threat from the online platform.
