CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A North Side school has a new name. Its old name was dropped because it honored a slaveowner.
Daniel Boone was an American pioneer who brought settlers to Kentucky in the 1770's. He became a folk hero with tales both real and made up, but Boone also owned several slaves and fought against Native Americans.
Now, his name will no longer grace a Chicago public school in the West Ridge neighborhood. The Chicago Public Schools board has approved a request to change the name of Daniel Boone School to Mosaic School of Fine Arts. The school has about 800 students.
It's the third school in the last few years to change its name, because of the namesake's racist or slaveowner past.
