(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — After dozens of dogs and cats were removed this week from a home in far west suburban Campton Hills, investigators say they aren't sure whether the home can be cleaned up enough to save it from demolition.

Campton Hills police went to the home on Town Hall Road near Route 64 on Thursday after getting an anonymous tip. Inside the home, Cmdr. Michael Zeigler said there were about 30 dogs and at least 20 cats.

The home was so full of trash and animal waste, police and firefighters had to put on protective gear before they could enter it safely, he said.

“In 30 years of being a police officer, it was probably by far the worst  one I’ve seen in my career — the amount of waste and garbage and animal feces in there.”

Police say an older couple and their three adult children lived in the home and were treated at hospitals for minor scratches and flea bites.

Kane County Animal Control is treating the dogs and cats and determining how many of them can be put up for adoption.
