(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Unseasonably warm temperatures will throttle up into the 70s on Tuesday before evening thunderstorms usher in a plunge back into winter weather.
Monday's high of 70 in Chicago broke the previous Feb. 26 record of 64 degrees in 2000, according to the National Weather Service. Tuesday, with a high in the mid- to upper-70s, could likewise break the 1976 record of 75 degrees.
But the joy won't last. Meteorologists predict thunderstorms by late afternoon that could bring harsh conditions, maybe even tornadoes. And the temperature will plunge into the 20s and 30s Wednesday.
On Monday, those conditions were far from the minds of motorists like Jackie Smook, who was among automobile owners washing their cars on Chicago's North Side.
"The weather feels amazing," she told WBBM Newsradio.
"It's a little concerning because it's only February with everything that we have in mind," she said, "but it's also so nice to have a break from the negative two-degree weather."
