(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Officials with Chicago’s Urban Prep Academies on Thursday recognized the latest group of seniors who have been accepted to four-year colleges or universities and offered some details about the lawsuit they hope will prevent a takeover by Chicago Public Schools.
Last week, state education officials upheld the Chicago Board of Education’s decision not to renew Urban Prep’s charter for alleged mismanagement and other problems.
Urban Prep leaders say they hope a judge will grant them a pathway to a charter extension through the next academic year. Their lawsuit argues if the charter is not renewed, the school must be closed, and this would violate a state law prohibiting school closures in the city of Chicago until 2025.
Chief Academic Officer Dennis Lacewell tells WBBM Newsradio Urban Prep wants the chance to face an elected school board next year and possibly gain some support from Mayor-elect Brandon Johnson.
More than 50 Urban Prep seniors gathered for the academy’s 14th annual College Signing Day. Once again, 100% of the institution’s graduating class has been admitted to four-year institutions.
The students wore traditional red and gold ties to symbolize their success.
