CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Some Asian–American basketball players from Bolingbrook High School said they were hurt and disappointed to hear racial slurs during a game at Joliet West High School.
Repeated anti-Asian slurs directed at Asian-American student athletes from the stands were caught on video.
The incident happened on Jan. 22 and was first reported on Friday by Joliet Patch.
Joliet Township High School District 204 released a statement, saying it’s “completely unacceptable and disappointing."
It went on to say, "we are deeply disturbed and embarrassed that this incident took place."
It also said the person yelling the slurs was not a student.
This incident followed a similar one that occurred recently at Northwestern University during a game against the University of Wisconsin-Madison Badgers.
A Badgers fan, judging by the clothing, raised his middle finger at a group of Asian students and then pulled back the skin around his eyes to make them appear slanted.
He was removed by Northwestern staff and police.
