(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Lake County officials are investigating what led to an overnight explosion and house fire in the northwest suburbs.

Firefighters were called to the home, located on West Forest Court near Lotus Avenue in unincorporated Antioch, at about 2:30 a.m. A 911 caller reported hearing an explosion and seeing their neighbor's house on fire.

Lake County Sheriff Deputy Chief Chris Covelli told WBBM that the cause of the fire is suspicious.

"I can't go into great detail on what they discovered, however it is very likely that an accelerant was used to have the fire spread more rapidly through the home," Covelli said. "That was one of the items that was located inside the house."

It didn't take long for firefighters to extinguish the fire. Covelli said investigators are talking to the homeowner.

"Fortunately, nobody was injured … inside the home, and very fortunately, no firefighters were injured putting the blaze out, [which] appears to have intentionally been set," he said.

The Lake County Sheriff's Office, Antioch Fire Protection District and the state fire marshall are investigating.
