CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Antonio Avelar was outside his family’s East Side home on Avenue O on the evening of May 17. He was having a yard sale to help the family.
Two shots were heard.
Avelar, who was 30 years old and autistic, was struck and eventually taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Security video captures the moments before and after, but not the shooting, itself, or the person or persons.
“He was an example of how every young man should be honest, fair, humble, kind, full of life, a good smile,” his sister, Anallely, told CBS 2.
She said her brother “was everything.”
“My best friend, my role model,” she said. “I looked up to him but now he's dead.”
Antonio Avelar’s mother Ignacia, while holding a bible, said in Spanish: "You can hide all you want from the people here who loved him, but from God, no one hides from God."
His phone and wallet were discarded nearby. Money was still in the wallet.
“We want criminals to pay,” said his sister.
