(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — For months, people on Chicago's North Side have been complaining about mysterious booming sounds that might be linked to a social media "challenge."
Lisa Achilly, a West Ridge neighborhood resident, likens the racket to the sound made by M-100s.
“They are at random times, on random days, in random places,” she told WBBM Newsradio on Thursday.
Forty-ninth Ward Ald. Maria Hadden tells Block Club Chicago that police are investigating whether the booms are related to a TikTok challenge in which people are encouraged to build explosive devices with household chemicals and post videos of the detonations.
Hadden says the booms are a nuisance and she's worried that people could get hurt.
