ARLINGTON HEIGHTS (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - While the Bears continue to focus on staying in Chicago, leaders in Arlington Heights publicly released new property tax numbers Monday night for building a stadium in that suburb.
Village Manager Randy Recklaus shared details of the proposal at a public meeting that would have the team pay $6.3 million in property taxes for the first year and $3.6 million for the second year. The numbers were shared with the Bears last month.
"We believe this proposal is fair and sensible, but the Village cannot impose this solution unilaterally," Recklaus said. "The Bears and the districts need to agree, and we're still awaiting the school district's and the Bears' responses to this February proposal."
He and Arlington Heights mayor Tom Hayes called the proposal fair and said the school district and the team would need to come up with a clause for the years after that. The figures are lower than what the taxes would be under the Cook County Board of Review's February assessment.
A resident who spoke at the meeting encouraged the board not to overcompensate now that the momentum is moving away from the village.
