(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — As the Democratic National Convention continues in Chicago, the head of the Republican Party in Illinois says having it here could help the GOP.
Democrats control the city of Chicago, as well as the governor's mansion and the state legislature in Illinois.
“In Illinois, you've got a Democrat in the governor's office. You've got a supermajority in the House and Senate. You've got two Democrat US senators. You've got 14 of 17 Democrat congressional offices failed. What better cry is there for Republican relief than that?” Kathy Salvi, the chair of the Illinois Republican Party says.
Salvi blames Democrats for a number of issues in the city and state including taxes, crime, rising prices and people moving away.
“The biggest challenge for Republicans is to make the case that it's bad Democrat policies that we've suffered that are driving families away, driving jobs out. And what's left is those of us who remain, have to pay the check, so to speak. We've got the burden of the mistakes of this failed governance in Illinois.”
Salvi says she believes the focus during the Democratic National Convention on Chicago and Illinois, as well as the issues they face, will encourage more voters to consider voting for Republicans this fall.
