More than $100 million is still available for low-income people behind on their natural gas or electric bills, and potential recipients are encouraged to apply before their utility service gets shut off.

"Over this last year, we’ve had more need than ever," David Wortman, deputy director of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, said Tuesday, citing the pandemic.

Low-income people behind on utility bills could see their service shut off after March 31, when the annual winter moratoriums expire.

Wortman said needy families can get more than the $600 average award, depending on their income.

"If there’s a large outstanding bill, we can help with that,” he said.

Jim Chilsen of the Citizens Utility Board says online informational sessions will be available March 11 in English and March 15 in Spanish on CUB's Facebook page. Both events are at 6 p.m.
