Listen: Astroworld tragedy reveals dark underbelly of festival industry

In the wake of the Astroworld Festival tragedy in Houston that resulted in at least 9 deaths and hundreds of injuries, many are asking was this preventable? And how do we make sure this doesn’t happen again? In a new In Depth podcast, WBBM's Jill DeGroot talked to crowd management expert Paul Wertheimer, CEO and founder of Crowd Management Strategies, who shared his expertise and techniques for surviving crowd crush.

Wertheimer also discussed his concerns about safety at Chicago's music festival Lollapalooza.

"Any festival that big that continues to grow that the space they have it in, or the space that's available to enjoy the stages is limited but the crowd grows, you have many challenges of crowd disorders," Wertheimer said.

He suggested training for security on crowd management that would include noticing the first signs of possible trouble as well as an emergency plan should a dangerous situation arise.
