(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Congresswoman Robin Kelly says she approves of President Biden's recent actions to curb gun violence but suggests the real battles will be over the laws that she feels Congress must pass to confront the problem.
Biden this week issued executive orders that regulate gun-building kits and the sale of shoulder braces for pistols.
Kelly, who represents Chicago's South Side and south suburbs, said Congress must ban assault weapons and expand background checks for purchases. She concedes the gun lobby is still strong on Capitol Hill.
Kelly argues, though, the majority Americans, including gun owners of both parties, support background checks.
"That is absolutely ridiculous. They are not listening to the American people," she says of federal lawmakers.
Kelly, who recently became chairwoman of the Illinois Democratic Party, is the guest on this weekend's "At Issue."
It airs 9:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. Sunday.
