(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The family of a Naperville mother who lost her 8-year battle with cancer is doing their best to help others keep fighting for life.

“Everybody knows somebody with cancer, and they feel so helpless because they don't know what to do. Donating blood is just a very easy and quick and fast, immediate way to give somebody the gift of more time,” says Kristyn Benedyk.

She and her family have organized the latest edition of "A Pint for Kim,” an annual blood drive in memory of her sister, Kim Sandford, who died from a rare cancer in 2020.

“She asked that the blood drive happen instead of a wake,” Kristyn said.

It did. More than 500 people donated, breaking the state record for one-day blood drive.

Kim's family hopes to break that record again this Saturday May 7 at their third annual blood drive. It runs from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at J.A. Air Center in Sugar Grove.

“Its permanent home is going to be always Saturday, the day before Mother’s Day. She has two young boys, and instead of dreading this weekend, we get to show up and save thousands of lives in their mom's memory.”
