(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — An Aurora police officer previously fired in 2017 but reinstated by an arbitrator has been terminated for a different offense, authorities announced Friday.
The latest investigation into Officer Jonathan Olsen dates back to April 2021, when an Aurora resident told police his teenaged child had received “numerous threatening voicemails” on their cell phone, according to a news release issued Friday. The phone number from the caller was associated with an Aurora police officer, officials said.
Olsen was placed on administrative leave after investigations and reviews into his potential misconduct began, the Aurora Police Department said.
An administrative case was returned to Police Chief Keith Cross, who recommended Olsen’s firing.
“It is crystal clear that Jonathan Olsen violated the law and traumatized several people with his actions,” Cross said in a prepared statement. “Our officers are held to a very high standard and must be held accountable for their actions.”
He goes on to say, Olsen’s “conduct was detrimental to the department as a whole and his credibility as a police officer.”
DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said his department would not be filing criminal charges, after conferring with the teen who allegedly had been targeted and his family, among other parties.
Olsen previously was terminated in 2017 by then-Police Chief Kristen Ziman for violating department policy, the Aurora Police Department said. He appealed the firing, and an arbitrator reduced his termination to a suspension of 60 days and reinstated him.
