AURORA, Ill. (WBBM Newsradio) – Some of the world's top young golfers will head to Aurora next week for the inaugural Chicago Junior All-Star Championship at Phillips Park Golf Course.
The American Junior Golf Association tournament will be held June 15-18 and feature a field of 96 boys and girls ages 12 to 15 competing in a nationally recognized event designed to help emerging players gain high-level tournament experience.
"It's gonna be great to see some really good swings and some good play from local players as well as players from across the U.S. and the world coming out," said Jeff Schmidt, Superintendent of Golf Operations at Phillips Park Golf Course.
Tournament week begins June 15 with a qualifier and official practice round. Championship play starts June 16 and continues through June 18 with 54 holes of stroke play. Following the second round, the field will be cut to the top 60% of players and ties for the final round.
Schmidt said hosting the tournament aligns with the course's commitment to growing the game among younger players.
"The game of golf has really grown post-COVID," Schmidt said. "We're also big proponents of promoting the game from the junior level all the way up to the adult level."
The championship is being hosted through a partnership between the City of Aurora, the American Junior Golf Association and the Aurora Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Organizers say they hope the event becomes a long-term fixture in Aurora and helps showcase the city as a destination for youth sports and junior golf.
