(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Organizers for Aurora's annual Pride Parade are suing the city over the near-cancelation of last year's parade.

The ACLU of Illinois said it's suing on behalf of the Aurora Pride organization over an ordinance that allowed police to refuse to provide security after organizers asked LGBTQ officers not to wear dress uniforms or weapons while marching.

The city revoked and later reinstated the parade's permit, which happened while mayor Richard Irvin was running for Illinois governor as a Republican. The city ultimately hired police officers on triple time and forwarded the bill to organizers, the ACLU says.

“Organizers of those kinds of events cannot be subject to the whims of city officials who can pull the rug out from under them days in advance because they decide that they don’t like the event or they don’t like the message,” said the ACLU’s Kevin Fee.

WBBM Newsradio has reached out to Aurora city government for a response.
