Supporters of people who have lost a loved one to suicide are hoping to bring light to a dark time.

The city of Aurora is working with a non-profit to host a candlelight vigil Thursday night, during Suicide Prevention Awareness Week.

The group Simply Destinee uses dance and the arts to talk with young people about mental health issues.

Martin Luna founded it after the death of his niece, 16-year-old Destinee Oliva, in 2010.

He says the remembrance will not only allow people to talk about those lost to suicide but offer a space for anyone struggling now.

The vigil is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday at Millennium Plaza in Aurora and will have a wind phone, where people can leave messages for the dead.

Luna says they’ve heard of an uptick in suicides in the area recently, showing how much their work is needed.
