CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A West Side home that was a mid-20th century vision of the future is now a city landmark.

The futuristic, three-story "Miracle House" located at 2001 N. Nordica Ave. was built in 1954 as the grand prize for a fundraiser for St. William parish nearby.

The house, featuring a pair of 36-ton steel trusses that suspend glass curtain walls and a unique open floor plan, was a mid-20th century vision of the future.

Everything was a gift. Architects Belli and Belli worked pro bono, the Chicago Bridge & Iron Co. donated the steel for the trusses, General Electric donated the appliances, and Chicago retailer Polk Bros. provided the furnishings. Local labor unions allowed their workers to build the house free of charge.

The Chicago City Council designated the home as an official Chicago landmark. The designation protects the house from significant alterations to the building's exterior and roofline.
