(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The state has filed a lawsuit against an auto salvage company over a fire that potentially contaminated the air and water around it in January.
The Illinois Attorney General’s Office has sued Mowery’s Auto Parts in Freeport, which is more than 100 miles northwest of Chicago. The auto salvage company sits near the Pecatonica River.
In January, there was a fire at Mowery’s in which salvage vehicles and hundreds of tires burned. The AG’s office said that filled the air with pollution and caused an oily sheen on a stream that led to the river. Mowery Auto Parts has agreed to undertake multiple clean-up and preventive actions to address the contamination caused by the fire.
