CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Some Cook County Commissioners and others are calling for a ban on the sale of flavored nicotine products in the suburbs.
The ordinance that Commissioner Donna Miller is sponsoring would prohibit the sale of any flavored nicotine products in unincorporated Cook County. There's already a ban in place in Chicago.
She said these products are meant to entice children into vaping and smoking.
Flavored e-cigarettes are hooking a whole new generation on nicotine, putting millions of kids and young adults at risk and threatening decades of progress in reducing youth tobacco use,” Miller said.
Dr. LaMar Hasbrouck, chief operating officer of the Cook County Department of Health agrees. County Board member Scott Britton is among those joining the call
“Two-and-a-half million U.S. middle and high school students have stated currently that they use e-cigarettes…almost nine out of ten of them have used flavored products,”
Sheriff Tom Dart, who's a father of five, said his Department is ready to enforce this.
“We know what’s going on here. This is common sense. This is incredibly addictive behavior,” Dart said.
Commissioner Miller said she expects the same kinds of resistance from retail merchants and others that Chicago received when it enacted a similar ban.
The measure was introduced at Thursday’s board meeting.
