Scammers are dialing up trouble with fake customer service numbers.
The Better Business Bureau’s “Tip-Off to the Rip-Off” on WBBM has some advice.
Online customer service searches are being hijacked by fraudsters using fake phone numbers that can appear at the top of search results.
Posing as helpful agents, and sounding quite convincing, these scammers pressure people into making payments or granting remote access to their electronic devices.
To protect yourself, always visit a company’s official website for contact information, and carefully double-check domains and links.
Also, be on the lookout for unsolicited calls, texts, emails, and unexpected pop-up warnings—these are common red flags used by scammers.
If something seems suspicious, search the phone number online along with the word “scam” to see if it’s a known con.
