As another Chicago winter officially begins, cold-weather scams can be especially chilling.

Jay Elliott with the Better Business Bureau’s Tip-Off to the Rip-Off® on WBBM has tips.

This time of year, three common scams include: phony energy audits, threats to cut off heat unless you pay immediately, and taking cash in advance for snow removal, then disappearing without doing the work.

Remember, utility companies will not call demanding immediate payment, and you should avoid paying anyone with gift cards or wire transfers.

Also, beware of strangers showing up at your door uninvited, using high-pressure tactics to get you to hand over money or sign an agreement on the spot.

Always research unfamiliar businesses, and don’t let anyone into your home without a pre-scheduled appointment.
