(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Fraudsters stealing money from people are cold hearted, and their tricks for winter scams can be especially chilling.

The official start of winter is coming next weekend, and scammers will be out to fleece victims with a variety of cold weather scams.

These scams include phony energy audits, threats to cut off energy without immediate payment, and door knockers taking cash for snow removal services that they never complete.

The number one red flag is someone showing up at your door unsolicited, with high-pressure tactics to get you to hand over money, or to sign an agreement on the spot.

Don’t feel pressured to make a decision without doing research on the company first.

And remember, no utility company will ever call you with a threat to pay a bill immediately or in unusual forms of payment.
