Moving can be exciting, but if you're not careful, you might find yourself with a truckload of troubles. This week, Jay Elliott with the Better Business Bureau's “Tip Off to the Rip Off” on WBBM reveals how to stay safe.

May is the busiest moving month of the year, so it's prime time for scammers and shoddy businesses to take advantage of people who aren't accustomed to the ins and outs of moving and are typically under tight deadlines and quite frankly a lot of stress. Common scans include movers taking your money and not showing up, surprise up charges, or worst of all, your belongings being stolen or held hostage for extra payment.

Here are some tips. Always get everything in writing and check ratings and reviews before hiring. Also, make an inventory list, photograph everything, and move your most prized possessions, especially jewelry, yourself.
