(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- There's new information about the Bears' plans for a new stadium along the lakefront.
The Bears reportedly would like a stand-alone hotel built along the lakefront, as part of a redevelopment that would include a new, domed stadium. But, according to Crain's Chicago Business, the team would likely give that up if there was too much opposition to it.
Crain's also reports that Soldier Field would not be torn down under the plan. Rather, it would be changed dramatically by raising the playing field so that a parking garage could be built underneath and would server the public and Chicago Public Schools sports programs.
Much of the $1 billion taxpayer cost would involve reconfiguring Columbus Drive and city streets to allow easier access to the Museum Campus, the report says.
The Bears organization has said it's prepared to put up $2 billion for a stadium complex, but its plan faces potential legal opposition by the group Friends of the Parks, which opposes building on the city's protected lakefront.
