(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Chicago Bears presented their pitch to bring a $3.2 billion stadium to life on the city's lakefront on Wednesday, with the project's potential total cost reaching $4.7 billion.
In a statement, Mayor Brandon Johnson said the project "marks a pivotal moment for Chicago."
"The proposed stadium, accompanied by expanded open spaces and recreational facilities, exemplifies my administration's commitment to enhancing the quality of life for all Chicagoans," Johnson said.
The stadium would be publicly owned, and the Bears said they would invest more than $2 billion in the project, which includes more than the new stadium. It would also include the expansion of public open spaces — with new sports fields and gardens taking the current place of Soldier Field.
Officials said the Bears would need $900 million from the Illinois Sports Facilities Fund.
