(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A beloved horse, who entertained and informed west suburban families for more than a decade, has died.

Doc was a Belgian draft horse who arrived at St. Charles’ Primrose Farm in 2010. By that time, he was 18 years old, which is the average lifespan for that breed.

Farm management said Doc recently began struggling with age and arthritis, and they added that he was having a hard time getting up. The horse was euthanized on July 3. He was 31.

“A standard-sized horse living a full life of 31 years is quite remarkable,” read a statement from Primrose Farm. “A draft horse living that long is almost unheard of.”

The manager of Primrose Farm said Doc pulled equipment and helped educate visitors on how farming was done in the past. He retired from those roles in 2015 — after which his duties included “greeting visitors and looking handsome,” according to the farm’s statement.

“He excelled at both,” officials wrote.

Before arriving at Primrose Farm in 2010, Doc was at Heritage Farm in Schaumburg and Wagner Farm in Glenview.

Following Doc’s passing, a farewell tribute was shared to St. Charles Park District YouTube page.

“We love you, Doc,” reads a caption at the end of the video. “You will be missed beyond words.”
