(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – After capturing the hearts of many people in North Aurora, a wild turkey that became the village's unofficial mascot has died.

Randi the turkey reportedly was struck by a vehicle Friday near the intersection of Randall, Mooseheart and Orchard roads, where the village recent installed a turkey crossing sign.

Witnesses pulled the turkey out of the road in hopes it could survive, but, “She didn’t make it,” Village President Mark Gaffino tells WBBM Newsradio.

Photos of the turkey were frequently posted to social media, and Gaffino said many residents were delighted by the animal.

A post on the village's Facebook page says Randi will be remembered for bringing together the community and making so many people smile.
