BENSENVILLE (CHICAGO) -- A 21-year-old Bensenville man was charged with attempted murder and denied bond in a court hearing this morning in connection with the shooting of a police officer.
A DuPage County judge granted the state's petition to deny bond for suspect Kiante Tyler, who was taken into police custody after an officer was shot eight times late Friday night.
"The state alleged that this offender, Kiante Tyler, was a danger to the community and that no conditions of bail could keep the public safe," DuPage County State's Attorney Bob Berlin told WBBM.
The charges allege that Tyler shot at Bensenville officer Steven Kotlewski after he came to Tyler's mother's residence, directly south of O'Hare Airport, on a domestic disturbance call. The suspect's mother had called the police because she wanted Tyler to leave.
Berlin said Officer Kotlewski had a conversation with Tyler's mother before Tyler came out and allegedly started shooting at the officer. The charges state that Tyler fired a total of ten rounds at Kotlewski, striking him eight times.
"Three times in each leg, one time in the back, and once in his arm," Berlin said. "He stumbled out of the apartment and was able to crawl into a stairwell when responding officers arrived."
Other officers arrived at the scene and applied tourniquets to Kotlewski after he was shot. The officer had emergency surgery for his injuries.
Tyler was charged with one count of attempted first degree murder, one count of aggravated battery to a police officer with a firearm, and two counts of aggravated battery to a police officer.
