(WBBM NEWSRADIO) --As QR codes continue to grow – scammers are starting to show!
Companies use QR codes to point consumers to their apps, track packages, or view menus, but these codes have become a way for scammers to disguise malicious links.
You may receive a message or mailing that includes a QR code. In some scams, the code takes you to a phishing website to steal your information or launch payment apps.
Here are some key tips for safety:
-Don’t open links from strangers even if they promise you exciting gifts or investment opportunities.
Watch out for advertising materials that have been tampered with.
-Some scammers attempt to mislead consumers by altering legitimate business ads with their own QR code stickers.
-If a QR code appears to come from a reputable source, it’s wise to double check.
