(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A bill to eliminate road testing for older drivers is moving through Springfield.
Illinois is currently the only state with such a requirement. The House Transportation Committee approved a bill last week to end the mandate that people age 79 and older take driving tests when they renew their licenses.
Rep. Jeff Keicher, a Republican from Sycamore, calls the state’s current system arbitrary and discriminatory against seniors, who, statistically, have fewer crashes than any other age group.
He says his bill goes further than the move by state lawmakers during the pandemic to temporarily raise the age from 75 to 79, as facilities faced backlogs following months of COVID closures.
He says he’s hopeful his measure will pass the full House and Senate and make its way to the governor.
