(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Two state lawmakers want to offer some relief to Chicago police officers who have had days off canceled repeatedly because of staffing shortages.
State Rep. Fran Hurley and State Sen. Bill Cunningham both represent parts of Chicago's Southwest Side, where a lot of police officers live.
They've proposed legislation that would ban police departments from forcing officers to work more than six days in a row.
Hurley on Wednesday said canceled days off are taking a toll on many Chicago police officers.
He and Cunningham say the solution to staffing shortages in the Chicago Police Department is to hire more officers.
The bill would only allow police departments to force officers to work more than six days in a row if the governor declares a public emergency.
Officers would still be able to volunteer to work on days off.
