(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — It’s a Valentine’s Day tradition dating back 18 years: The widow of one of the producers of the Chicago Auto Show donates blood in honor of her late husband.

Lauren Buckley said well before he ever needed a transfusion himself, Dennis Buckley brought a blood drive to the auto show in 1998.

The first of its kind drive is now named after him.

Ever since Dennis died of cancer in 2004, Lauren has rolled up her sleeve “just to show my love and devotion” she told WBBM Newsradio on Monday.

Aurora-based Versiti Blood Center hopes to collect 1,400 units at the Auto Show.

The non-profit’s big pink bus will be in McCormick Place’s south building near the electric car track every day of the show through next Monday.

Spokeswoman Amy Smith said COVID restrictions have led to a national blood shortage.
