(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Geneva man has been cited for a number of boating violations on the Chain O’Lakes.

Twenty-five-year-old Clayton Star had a group out on the water for a 2-hour cruise at cost of $500, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. But when Star was checked out by deputies in the Marine Unit, they found he didn’t have a captain’s license or the required safety equipment, officials say.

He was cited for operating a watercraft for hire without a license, operating a watercraft without proper equipment and other violations, the sheriff’s office said.

Sheriff John Idleberg said boaters looking to hire a charter should check for credentials before closing the deal.

“As we all know, the water can be a very dangerous place, which is why it is very important those soliciting business on the waterways have the required training, experience, and licensing.  It is incredibly reckless to be soliciting boating fares without the proper licensing or boating equipment,” he said.
