(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — With the backing of Congressman Bobby Rush, Karin Norington-Reaves is running for the seat he is leaving, but victory is no sure thing as the crowd of rivals in the First District grows.

As the longtime head of the Chicago Cook Workforce Partnership, she’s won praise for how she’s run the organization — but not a lot of visibility.

Norington-Reaves said she’s not concerned that rival candidates, such as Ald. Pat Dowell, or potential rivals, such as state Sen. Jaqueline Collins, D-Chicago, have a higher profile — or that it’s likely to be a crowded field.

She notes that in the last election for Chicago mayor, there were more than 20 candidates initially before a relatively unknown hopeful, Lori Lightfoot, emerged.

“There were lots of stunners and surprises,” she said.

She said in her current role she has worked with policymakers.

Rush, 75, announced recently he will not seek a 16th term in Congress. The onetime Illinois Black Panther Party leader and former Chicago City Council member said he wants to spend more time with his family.
