(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Illinois state health officials say two cases of botulism-like illness may be linked to cosmetic injections administered by a nurse in LaSalle County.

The Illinois Department of Public Health has told hospitals to be on the lookout for patients exhibiting botulism symptoms, which include blurred vision, drooping face and fatigue.

This comes after two people were hospitalized after receiving injections they thought were Botox but may have been bogus. A licensed nurse in LaSalle County administered these treatments but was acting beyond the scope of her authority, the health department said.

“Illinois residents should exercise caution when considering cosmetic treatment,” Illinois Health Director Dr. Sameer Vohra said in a prepared statement. “Receiving these treatments in unlicensed, unapproved settings can put you or your loved ones at serious risk for health problems.”

People who develop complications after receiving cosmetic injections should contact their health care provider immediately.

The Illinois cluster follows similar reports of people made ill from possibly fake Botox shots in Tennessee.
