CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Two women and an 8-year-old boy have died after a shooting in Chicago's Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood on the Fourth of July, which also left two other children wounded.
Chicago police believe gunmen got out of two vehicles at about 6:15 a.m. and fired so many shots at a home at 71st Street and Woodlawn Avenue that at least one neighbor thought it was fireworks.
Markita Scott told CBS 2 her daughter, 24-year-old Capri Edwards, died shielding her children from bullets.
"She was a great mom, a great sister, and she was my best friend — not only my daughter, but my best friend," Scott said. "We talked every day [on] FaceTime. This is going to be very hard for me, not to see my baby's face anymore."
The other woman killed was 45-year-old Nakeesha Strong.
Police said an 8-year-old boy wounded in the shooting has died. Two other children, ages 5 and 8, were initially listed in critical condition at the hospital.
Mayor Brandon Johnson offered condolences to the family for what he called a tragic incident.
