(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A 9-year-old boy was fatally shot Thursday evening in the south suburb of Matteson as the police chief decried the problem of gun violence.
Village President Sheila Chalmers-Currin said the community is in mourning over the death of Amari Jones Brown yesterday evening about 6 p.m.
Officials offered few details at a Friday news conference. The shooting occurred around 6 p.m. on the 800 block of Campus Avenue, Matteson Police Chief Mike Jones said. A 20-year-old showed up to a local hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
"Both victims were shot during the same incident," Jones said. "I urge our legislators and our judicial system to increase the fight against gun violence, especially involving our youth."
An investigation continues.
