Changes coming to Brandon Johnson's migrant housing strategy: Report

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The City of Chicago will not be building any more shelters to temporarily house migrants.

Cost was cited as a major reason that the city is moving away from the idea of constructing more tent camps, like the one operated by the State of Illinois in Little Village.

Politico reported Mayor Brandon Johnson has been meeting with aldermen to discuss the change in approach — one that would have the city leaning on its partnerships with churches.

Chicago's dashboard shows more than 14,000 migrants are in shelters and another 232 were awaiting placement.

The city has relaxed its 60-day limit on shelter stays until Feb. 1 due to the weather.
