(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The NCAA is being sued by two brothers who claim they were unfairly barred from playing basketball at Chicago State University for allegedly violating rules that limit compensation and contracts for student athletes.
Matthew Bewley and Ryan Bewley, 19-year-old twins, are challenging the NCAA’s decision denying their request for "amateur" status to play for Chicago State University. The decision was based on compensation they received while playing for an elite basketball academy in Georgia, according to the lawsuit.
Both received scholarships for Chicago State.
The NCAA, according to the lawsuit, claimed the compensation exceeded "actual and necessary" expenses and the academy considers its team to be professional.
The Bewleys said the NCAA decision was “arbitrary,” and that other academy players who received compensation were allowed to play college basketball.
