(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The owner of a Brown Sugar Bakery, located on Chicago’s South Side, is hoping for a reunion with a high-profile customer during next month's Democratic National Convention.
Stephanie Hart left a 20-year career in tech to open Brown Sugar Bakery in 2002. Flash forward 22 years, and the bakery has become a fixture at 75th Street and Calumet Avenue in Chicago’s Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood.
Vice President Kamala Harris visited the bakery in 2021, and Hart told the WBBM Noon Business Hour that she's hoping for a reunion with the presumptive democratic presidential nominee at next month's DNC.
“There are a few events that we’ll be at, including a couple of big events at Navy Pier that she may show up to, because these are pretty big events. We’re hoping that something of ours will get to her.”
Hart said she shares a birthday with Mick Jagger, and the bakery is named after a Rolling Stones song that was used as an insult when she was growing up in the western suburbs.
“It was tough in those days,” Hart said. “I stuck out. About 4,000 kids, about 10 minorities. But I would tell them, ‘You know you’re singing songs about me, right?’ And they were like, ‘We’re not singing songs about you.’ I’m like, ‘Every time you say, “Brown sugar,” you’re singing about me.’”
The bakery specializes in birthday cakes. She's also adding ice cream and a 27-piece box of strawberries.
Hart was a guest on the WBBM Noon Business Hour’s Entrepreneur Friday. The full interview can be heard below. Tune into the Noon Business Hour every weekday when the markets are open.
